Mark Schreiner

Assistant News Director/Intern Coordinator

I am assistant news director and intern coordinator for WUSF News. In my job, I oversee our news coverage during the midday and All Things Considered, as well as our education coverage and news interns.

I love my job because no two days are the same and the Tampa Bay area and Florida are great places for news. I also enjoy working with students, teaching the next generation of journalists, and giving back much like the people who taught me so many years ago.

I was brought on as the freelance producer and reporter for "University Beat" on WUSF 89.7 FM from 2001-2007. After getting hired as a full-timer in 2007, I continued producing “University Beat,” which also aired on WUSF TV from 2007-2017. In addition, I’ve served as a host, producer, and reporter on both WUSF FM and WUSF TV.

Before that, I worked as an anchor, reporter, assignment editor, and producer at radio stations in Tampa and my native Chicago since 1992, following in the footsteps of my father, former WGN 720 AM reporter Larry Schreiner.

I’ve been fortunate enough to win a number of honors as a reporter, including a pair of regional Edward R. Murrow awards, a Silver Telly award for the documentary, “Plant City Goes to War,” and multiple awards from the Associated Press Florida Broadcasters, the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists.

I graduated from Columbia College in Chicago with a BA in Telecommunications/Radio in 1994, and when I’m not working, I enjoy watching sports and movies, reading, and consuming good food, great wines and IPAs.
