This year, Amendment One is expected to provide about $757 million for land and water conversation, and requests for a piece of that funding now total more $1.2 billion dollars.
The Florida House's Agricultureand Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee has received 475 requests to fund water projects around the state. They range from $15,000 to $96.8 million.
State Rep. Ben Albritton, R-Bartow, the chairman of the committee, said the biggest challenge will be distributing the money.
"We have this golden opportunity that is given to us through Amendment One," he said during a committee meeting in Tallahassee on Tuesday. "And that is not really well-defined, so we have to work on the definition of what Amendment One means for us--for the legislature, the folks that have to implement this."
The upcoming legislative session begins March 3.
